Word List
Made with Crossword Print · crosswordprint.com/words-that-start-with/
Words That Start With is a free tool that lists English words that start with the letters you choose, of any length or exactly 5 letters: words that start with a, words starting with re, or words that start with x. It runs in your browser, so there is no sign-up, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
The word list holds about 54,000 English words. Common words appear first, and rarer words are shown in grey. You can narrow the list by word length, by letters the word must contain, by letters it must avoid, and by how common the word is.

How to use the Words That Start With tool
- Pick a starting letter from the A–Z chips (the default is A). For a longer start, type it in the box marked “Or type the start”, such as re, un, qu, or ch.
- Choose a length chip: Any, Short (≤4), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or Long (9+).
- Optional: type letters in the Contains box. Tick the box if the letters must stay together in that order. Use the Leave out box for letters the word must not have.
- Set Sort to Common first or A–Z.
- Tick “Common words only” if you want to hide the rarer words.
- Click Show Words. A count line appears above the first 300 words. Use Show more or Show all to see the rest.
- Tap any word to see its part of speech and up to two short definitions. Or tick “Show meanings” to print a definition under every word.
Try an Example loads a sample search, and Clear resets the page. Copy List copies the results one word per line. Print List makes a clean printable sheet of up to 1,500 words. The search also appears in the address bar, so a link such as ?start=qu&len=5 reopens the same list for you or anyone you share it with. Printed lists are free for commercial use too, for example in KDP books or Etsy printables.
Words starting with A, J, M, X or Y with meaning: how do I see what they mean?
Set the start to the letter you want, such as a, j, m, x, or y, and click Show Words. Tap any word to see its meaning, or tick “Show meanings” to show a short definition under every word. The same works for any letter. Some short function words have no definition on file.
How many words start with a in this list?
The list holds 3,563 words that start with A, and 1,140 of them are common. For five-letter words, 258 start with A. The count line above the results gives the exact total for whatever filters you have set, so check it after each change.
50 words starting with b with meaning: how do I get them?
Set the start to B, leave the length on Any, and tick “Show meanings” before you click Show Words. Keep Sort on Common first so the most frequent words appear at the top. The list for B is much longer than 50 words, so use the count line and the Show more button to see how many there are and to read through them. To get a shorter list, add a length chip.
Words that start with x: why is the list short?
X is a less common starting letter in English (only a handful of words begin with XI, and none begin with XU), so the list for X is shorter than the lists for letters like A or S. Click Show Words with the start set to X to see every match. If you want only a certain kind of word, add a length or a Contains filter to narrow it further.
5 letter words that start with re, qu, or un: what can I expect?
Set the length to 5 and type re, qu, or un in the start box. There are 57 five-letter words that start with RE and 27 that start with QU, such as queen, quiet, quite, and quick. Words that start with Q without U are rare: the list has only qadi and qibla. For UN, read the count line for the total.
Remember that this tool matches the first letters only. A search for un returns uncle and under, which are not built from the prefix un- in the way undo is. You will need to check each result’s meaning if you want words that really use a prefix.
Long words that start with a letter: how do I filter by length?
Click the Long (9+) chip to show only words with nine or more letters. For an exact length, click one of the number chips, such as 7 for seven-letter words that start with a letter. Short (≤4) covers words of four letters or fewer. Word lengths in the tool run from 2 to 15 letters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I search for two or three letters at the start of a word?
Yes. Type the letters in the “Or type the start” box, such as re, un, ch, qu, cat or photo, and click Show Words. To find words that start with T and end with T, such as trust and treat, use the Starts with and Ends with boxes on the 5 Letter Words page or the Word Finder.
Does the tool find words by prefix meaning?
No. It matches the first letters you enter, so un also returns uncle and under. Check the meaning of each word if the prefix matters to you.
Are the results sorted by how common the word is?
They are by default. Common first puts everyday words at the top. Choose A–Z in the Sort control to sort alphabetically instead.
What do the grey words mean?
Grey words are rarer. Tick “Common words only” to hide them.
Can I find describing words that start with a certain letter?
The tool does not filter by part of speech. Tap a word to see whether it is a describing word, or try the Adjectives That Start With page, which lists describing words by letter.
Does the tool keep what I type?
Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The search is only saved in the address bar, which you can bookmark or share.
How do I print or copy a list?
Click Print List for a printable sheet of up to 1,500 words, or click Copy List to copy the results one per line.
Can I use the printed word lists for commercial purposes, such as Amazon KDP or Etsy?
Yes. Word lists you make here are free to use for any purpose, including classroom packs, KDP puzzle and activity books, Etsy printables and print-on-demand products, royalty-free and with no attribution needed. The only limit is that you may not copy the tool itself to run a competing service.

About prefixes
A prefix is an affix which is placed before the stem and before the suffix of a word. Particularly in the study of languages, a prefix is also called a preformative, because it alters the form of the word to which it is affixed.
Prefixes, like other affixes, can be either inflectional, creating a new form of a word with the same basic meaning and same lexical category, or derivational, creating a new word with a new semantic meaning and sometimes also a different lexical category. Prefixes, like all affixes, are usually bound morphemes.
English has no inflectional prefixes, using only suffixes for that purpose. Adding a prefix to the beginning of an English word changes it to a different word. For example, when the prefix un- is added to the word happy, it creates the word unhappy.
The word prefix is itself made up of the stem fix (meaning "attach", in this case), and the prefix pre- (meaning "before"), both of which are derived from Latin roots.
English language
This is a fairly comprehensive, although not exhaustive, list of derivational prefixes in English. Depending on precisely how one defines a derivational prefix, some of the neoclassical combining forms may or may not qualify for inclusion in such a list. This list takes the broad view that acro- and auto- count as English derivational prefixes because they function the same way like that of prefixes such as over- and self- do.
As for numeral prefixes, only the most common members of that class are included here. There is a large separate table covering them all at Numeral prefix > Table of number prefixes in English.
The choice between hyphenation or solid styling for prefixes in English is covered at Hyphen > Prefixes and suffixes.
