Two Letter Words is a free tool that lists every two letter word used in North American Scrabble-style word games: 107 words, from aa and ab to za. Use it to check whether a word is playable, to learn the short words that score points, or to print a cheat sheet. It runs in your browser with no sign-up.
The list has 107 entries, the same number as the North American NASPA Word List 2023 (NWL2023), according to Wikipedia (checked 2026-10-17). Common words such as of, to and in appear first, and you can tap any word for a short meaning. The Collins word list used in many other countries is longer, with 127 two letter words, and is not included here. Check your own tournament or app dictionary before a match.
How to use the two letter words list
The list opens with all 107 words, common words first.
Click a letter in the A–Z buttons to see the two letter words that start with it, for example Q for qi.
To use a letter in the second position, type it in the “Ends with” box, or put it in the second box of “Letter in a fixed position.”
To see only the words you can make from your tiles, type them into “Letters I have.” Use ? for a blank tile.
Use the Vowels menu to find words with no A, E, I, O or U (by, hm, mm, my, sh), one vowel, or two vowels.
Tap a word to see its meaning, or tick “Show meanings.”
To see one letter that can sit at the end, such as every word that ends in E, type that letter into “Ends with” and click Show Words.
Click Try an Example for a sample search, and Clear to start again.

How many two letter words are there in Scrabble?
The North American list (NWL2023) has 107 two letter words, and the list here has the same number. The Collins Scrabble Words list used in many other countries has 127. Because the lists differ, a word that is valid in one game may be rejected in another.
Which two letter words have no vowels?
Five words in this list have no A, E, I, O or U: by, my, hm, mm and sh. By and my use Y as their vowel sound; hm, mm and sh have no vowel sound at all. They are useful when your rack is short of vowels.
Which two letter words use Q, X, J or Z?
Q has one: qi. X has five: ax, ex, ox, xi and xu. J has one: jo. Z has one: za. These words score well because the letters are worth many points.
Which two letter words start with each letter?
A starts the most, with 16 words. O starts 14, E starts 11, M starts 7 and U starts 6. No word in this list starts with C or V. J, Q, R and Z start one word each: jo, qi, re and za.
Which letters can end a two letter word?
A, E, I and O each end 13 words. After them come M with 6, then H, N and S with 5 each. No word ends in C, J, Q, V or Z, and only one ends in B (ab), one in G (ag) and one in K (ok).
Which two letter words have two vowels?
Five words have two vowels: aa, ae, ai, oe and oi. Of the other 102 words, 97 have exactly one vowel and 5 have none.
Which two letter words are the most common?
Of, to, in, is, it, on, as, he, by and at are among the most common English words. The tool lists common words first, so they appear at the top.

Is “qi” a valid word?
Yes, it is in the list here. Qi is a word for life force in Chinese philosophy, and it is one of the few ways to play a Q without a U.
Do all word games use the same two letter words?
No. Word lists differ between games and countries. The list here is a 107-word list; Collins has 127. Always check the dictionary your game uses.
Is there a two letter word with C or V?
No. No word in this list starts with C or V, and none ends in C, J, Q, V or Z. To play those tiles you need a longer word, which Word Finder can suggest.
Are “ok” and “ew” valid?
Both are in the list here. Older dictionaries may not have them, so check the version your game uses before you rely on them.
Can I list only the words that start with a given letter?
