Words With X or Any Letter: Find Words Containing Letters

Words With X is a free tool that lists English words containing a letter or a group of letters. Start with words with X, or click any other letter on the A–Z buttons, or type letters such as ei, ie, ph, ck, ough or tion. It runs in your browser with no sign-up, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

The word list holds about 52,000 English words. In it, 1,367 words contain X, and 374 of those are common. Common words appear first, rarer words are shown in grey, and you can tap any word for a short meaning. You can narrow the list by length, by starting or ending letters, or by letters to leave out, then copy or print it.

How to use the Words With X tool

1. Open the tool. The default view lists words that contain the letter X.
2. Pick another letter from the A–Z buttons, or type letters into the box marked “Or type the letters,” such as ph, ie or ough.
3. Tick the checkbox under the boxes if the letters must appear together and in that order. Leave it unticked to find words that contain each letter anywhere.
4. Choose a length button: Any, Short (4 letters or fewer), 2 to 8, or Long (9 or more).
5. Optional: fill in Starts with, Ends with, or Leave out to narrow the list.
6. Tick “Common words only” to hide rarer words, and choose Common first or A–Z for the sort order.
7. Click Show Words. The count appears above the first 300 results. Use Show more or Show all to see the rest.
8. Tap a word to see its meaning, or tick “Show meanings” to see a short meaning under every word.

Try an Example shows a sample search, and Clear resets the controls. Copy List gives one word per line. Print List makes a clean sheet of up to 1,500 words. The search is saved in the address bar, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same list. The Popular letter combinations table links to common letter groups. What words contain the letter X?

In this word list, 1,367 words contain X. Common ones include next, six, example, sex, text, expected and box. There are 99 five-letter words with X, 32 of them common, such as extra, exist, mixed, fixed and exact. Only five two-letter words contain X: ax, ex, ox, xi and xu.

How many words contain Y, Z, Q or J?

The list has 6,587 words with Y (1,973 common), 1,214 with Z (253 common), 846 with Q (195 common) and 632 with J (188 common). Click the letter on the A–Z buttons to see each list.

How do I find words with ei, ie, ph, ck, ough or tion?

Type the letters in the box and tick the checkbox so the letters must stay together in that order. In this list, 421 words contain “ei” and 1,664 contain “ie”. 942 contain “ph”, 909 contain “ck”, 74 contain “ough” and 2,400 contain “tion”. The list has 4,532 words with “ing” in them, and 4,003 of them end in it. Add a length button to find, for example, six-letter words with “ph”.

Which words start or end with X?

Only 17 words in the list start with X, and most are rare, such as xenon, xebec and xenia. Many more end with X: 166 words, 43 of them common, including six, sex, box, mix, fox, tax, fix and max. To list them, put x in the “Starts with” or “Ends with” box and keep the letter X selected, or use the Words Ending In tool.

What are the best Scrabble words with X?

In Words With Friends the tile X is worth 8 points, the value used by our Words With Friends Cheat tool. The shortest plays are the five two-letter words ax, ex, ox, xi and xu. In this list, 25 three-letter words and 37 four-letter words contain X, such as box, wax, next and text. This list is general English, not an official Scrabble dictionary, so check your game’s own word list before you rely on a play.

Which words contain both X and another letter?

Type two letters in the box and leave the “together” checkbox unticked. For example, 8 words contain both X and Q (exquisite, equinox and exchequer among them) and 189 contain both X and Y (extremely, exactly and oxygen).

What is the difference between letters together and letters anywhere?

With the checkbox ticked, “ph” finds only words that have P directly followed by H, such as phone and graph. With it unticked, the tool finds any word that has both a P and an H somewhere, such as help or shop. Use the unticked setting when you hold a few letters and do not know their order.
