Wordle Solver is a free browser tool that suggests your next Wordle guess and shows which words could still be the answer. You enter each guess, set each tile’s color to match the game, and the solver narrows the list after every row. It works as a wordle helper and wordle hint tool for the New York Times Wordle game, which is separate from this page. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and works on a phone. Starting words appear before your first guess, so you can begin with one click. The words left are ranked, so the likeliest answers come first.
How to use the Wordle Solver
- Look at the board, which has six rows of five tiles. Before your first guess, click one of the 12 starting words (such as RAISE or SLATE) to drop it into the first row. You can also type any five-letter word yourself.
- Type your guess with the keyboard or the on-screen keyboard. Use Backspace to fix a letter.
- Set the color of each tile to match what your Wordle game showed. Click a tile once for yellow, twice for green, and three times to return it to grey.
- Check that all five tiles match your game. The solver then updates after the completed row.
- Read the results: the number of words left, up to 10 best next guesses as buttons, and the full list of remaining words, best first. The first 300 words are shown. Click Show all to see the rest.
- Choose one of the suggested words for your next row, then repeat from step 2 with its colors.
- When only one word is left, the page shows “The answer”.
To set colors from the keyboard, press Tab to focus a tile, then press 1 for grey, 2 for yellow or 3 for green. The Try an Example button loads a sample game so you can see the steps first. Nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
What is the Wordle game?
Wordle is a word puzzle game created by Josh Wardle and later bought by The New York Times. Each day there is one hidden five-letter word to find. This solver is an independent helper and is not the official game.
How to play Wordle: the rules
You have six tries to find the hidden word, and every guess must be a real word. After each guess, the game colors every tile. Green means the letter is correct and in the right place. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in another place. Grey means the letter is not in the word, or the word has no more copies of it.
What does yellow mean in Wordle?
Yellow tells you where a letter is not. It is in the word, but not in the spot you guessed, so move it to a new position next time. A green letter can be locked in place for later guesses.
What are the Wordle rules for double letters?
If a guess repeats a letter, the game colors it only as many times as the answer holds that letter. For example, guessing GEESE against the answer SPEED gives grey, yellow, green, yellow, grey. The third E is grey because SPEED has only two Es.
The solver reads these results carefully. A letter that is grey and also yellow or green means exactly that many copies are in the word. A letter that is only yellow or green means at least that many copies are in the word.
What is Wordle hard mode?
Hard mode means every hint you have revealed must be used in your next guesses. The solver does not enforce hard mode, but every word it suggests fits all the colors so far, so its suggestions are always legal in hard mode.
What is WordleBot?
WordleBot is the New York Times’ own tool that reviews a finished game. This solver is a separate tool that suggests the next guess while you are still playing.
Wordle tips: the best Wordle strategy
Open with a word that uses common letters, such as several vowels (A, E, I) and common consonants (R, S, T, L, N). The solver’s starting buttons all follow this pattern. After a poor first result, pick a second word with new letters instead of repeating grey ones, so each guess removes as many words as possible.
Some word families have many members that differ in one letter. The ending _ATCH, for example, includes BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCH and WATCH in this list. Guessing one candidate at a time can use up all six tries, so pick a guess that tests several of the different letters at once. The solver only suggests real candidates, so use the remaining-word list to build such a guess yourself.
In one example with the hidden answer PLUMB, RAISE turned all five tiles grey and left 178 words. MOUND then left five words: PLUMP, CLUMP, PLUMB, THUMB and THUMP. Four of these share the same color pattern, so any guess among them can still miss.
Can you win Wordle every time? How a solver helps
No method guarantees a win every time, but a solver that only suggests possible answers makes a loss rare. When the solver’s top suggestion was played after opening with RAISE, a test on 150 random common five-letter words (not plurals) averaged 3.19 guesses. One word was solved on guess 1, 17 on guess 2, 89 on guess 3, 39 on guess 4, 3 on guess 5 and 1 on guess 6. None needed a seventh guess. The solver only suggests words that could still be the answer, so it never proposes a burner word that cannot win.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the Wordle word of the day, and does the solver give it?
The Wordle word of the day is the single answer everyone playing that day is trying to find. This solver does not give the daily answer and never lists answers by date. It only shows words from its own list that still fit the colors you entered.
Why does the Wordle solver say no word fits?
Usually a tile color was set wrongly, or a row was typed with the wrong letters. Check each row against your game, paying attention to repeated letters.
Is the Wordle solver free, and does it save my guesses?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser, the word list is downloaded once, and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
Does the solver work on a phone?
Yes. It is a web page with an on-screen keyboard, and the tiles are tap targets. It is not an app.
Is this the official Wordle game?
No. Wordle is a game of The New York Times, and you can play the official daily puzzle on its site. This page is an independent helper.
Can the solver check a Wordle game with six-letter words?
No. The solver works only with five-letter words from its list. It does not support other lengths, a hard-mode filter, or the game’s official answer list.
Can I print my Wordle board?
No. Printing a Wordle board is not supported.

About Wordle
Wordle is a web-based word game created and developed by the Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle. In the game, players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, receiving feedback through colored tiles that indicate correct letters and their placement. A single puzzle is released daily, with all players attempting to solve the same word. It was inspired by the English game Mastermind.
Originally developed as a personal project for Wardle and his partner, Wordle was publicly released in October 2021. It gained widespread popularity in late 2021 after the introduction of a shareable emoji-based results format, which led to viral discussion on social media. The game's success spurred the creation of numerous clones, adaptations in other languages, and variations with unique twists. It has been well-received, being played 4.8 billion times during 2023.
The New York Times Company acquired Wordle in January 2022 for a "low seven-figure sum". The game remained free but underwent changes, including the removal of offensive or politically sensitive words and the introduction of account logins to track stats. Wordle was later added to the New York Times Crossword app (later The New York Times Games) and accompanied by WordleBot, which gave players analysis on their gameplay. In November 2022, Tracy Bennett became the game's first editor, refining word selection. Also in 2022, Hasbro released a physical board game based on Wordle, and in May 2026, NBC announced it was bringing Wordle as a prime time game show sometime in 2027, hosted by Savannah Guthrie.
Gameplay
Every day, a new five-letter word is chosen, and players attempt to guess it within six tries. After each guess, the letters are color-coded based on their accuracy:
Green indicates a correct letter in the correct spot.
Yellow signifies that the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot.
Gray means the word doesn't contain that letter in any spot.
If a guessed word contains multiple instances of the same letter—such as the "o"s in "robot"—those letters will be marked green or yellow only if the answer also contains them multiple times. If not, extra occurrences will be marked gray.
