Licences and credits
Everything on this site runs in your browser. These are the outside works it is built on, and the terms they are used under.
Text
- Wikipedia and Simple English Wikipedia. Topic-page articles, clue sentences, answer-key definitions and the short background sections under the tools are adapted from Wikipedia articles, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Each page names its source article and revision and links to the list of authors. Text was shortened and cleaned; clues blank out one word. The adapted text stays under the same licence.
- Images on topic pages come from Wikimedia Commons; each caption names the author, the licence and links to the file page.
Word lists and statistics
- English word list used by the word tools: dwyl/english-words (Unlicense), kept only where the word appears in English Wikipedia text, then cleaned of proper nouns and abbreviations with the help of Open English WordNet (CC BY 4.0, by the Open English WordNet team and contributors).
- How common a word is (used to sort results and by the cryptogram solver): counts from English sentences that Tatoeba contributors released under CC0, combined with Simple English Wikipedia word frequencies. Only counts are used; no sentences are reproduced.
- Word lists for Hangman, Pictionary and charades, and the sample quotations, were written or chosen for this site (the quotations are old and in the public domain).
Code
- Crossword Layout Generator by Michael Wehar — MIT licence (a debug log line was removed). Places the words in the crossword makers.
- word-search by blex41 — MIT licence, bundled unmodified. Builds word-search grids.
- QR code generator used on printable topic pages — a minified copy of qrcode-generator by Kazuhiko Arase, MIT licence.
- All other tool code was written for this site.
