How to make and play a Christmas crossword

  1. Open the Theme menu and choose Mixed Christmas, or one theme such as Food and drink or Carols and songs.
  2. Open the Size menu. Easy has about 8 words in a 9 × 9 grid, Medium about 12 words in 11 × 11, Hard about 16 words in 13 × 13, and Big about 22 words in 15 × 15.
  3. Type a title if you like. If you leave it empty, the sheet is titled after the theme.
  4. Press New Crossword. The status line shows how many words fit. Changing the theme or size also builds a new puzzle.
  5. To solve it on screen, tap a square and type. Tap the same square again, or press Space, to switch between Across and Down. Tap a clue to jump to its word. The number in brackets after each clue is the length of the answer.
  6. Use Check to mark wrong letters in red, Reveal Word or Reveal All to see answers, and Clear to start over. A timer runs while you solve.
  7. Tick Add a word bank to the printout if you want the answers listed in alphabetical order under the clues. This makes the sheet easier for young children.
  8. Press Print Puzzle for a sheet with a Name and Date line, the numbered grid and the clues. Press Print Answer Key for the filled grid with the answers listed by number. Both open your browser’s print dialog, so you can also save a PDF.

What is a Christmas crossword?

A Christmas crossword is a crossword puzzle whose answers all have to do with the holiday. As in any crossword, each answer is written into a grid, either across or down, and every square where two words cross must hold the same letter. Here the clue for each answer is a short hint, such as “A ring of evergreens hung on a door” for WREATH. It is a popular activity for family evenings, classroom parties, office games and holiday cards.

Is there a Christmas crossword answer key?
